FISHING

Anglers are offered fishing on the River Nith from the local Angling Association which has 3.5 miles with fishing on both banks. Suitable access roads present anglers with ideal opportunities to fish for Nith salmon and seatrout, from February to the end of November.

Trout lochs and private beats are also available in the area, details of which may be obtained from Reception. There are many alternatives for the anglers on the nearby Buccleuch Estates on the the Upper beats of the Nith.

Drumlanrig Castle (open Easter to End of August 2008) and Queensberry Estate also have Gardens, Nature Walks, Cycle Routes, Cycle Museum and Field Sports.

SHOOTING

The Buccleuch Hotel can arrange shooting for your visit in association with Roy Jacobs, 2-10 guns per day, 20/60 bird plays driven or walk up days available, Bags can include pheasant, woodcock, snipe, duck and hares. Contact us for more information.

Pheasant shooting available, driven or walk up days available on local estates. Also evening duck flights, and deer stalking can be arranged.

By arrangement. 2001-2002 season to 1st February. We have some good rough Shooting days available until the end of season for between 2 and 8 guns. Shooting on the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberrys's Estate. From February onwards Driven days available also on the Buccleuch & Queensberry estate.


GOLF

2 fore 1 vouchers can also be purchased, which allow 2 people to play golf for the price of one green fee. These can be obtained at 2-fore-1, which also has a listing of all the participating courses in the area.

Golfers are welcome at the Thornhill Golf Club (instituted in 1893) either as single players or in small parties. The 18 hole golf course is siutated on a plateau above the village and overlooks the Nith Valley. The S.S.S is 70 and the length of the course is 6124 yards.

There are numerous other courses within a short drive of the hotel a selection of these are listed below.

The Pines Golf Centre

This course built on a mixture of undulating grazing land, heathland and woodland with some significant water features, is a challenge to golfers of all abilities. Many dogleg holes and interesting green positions will make your round of golf very memorable. Facilities include Clubhouse with Locker Room, Lounge Bar, and Driving Range.

Southerness Golf Club

A relatively new course opened in 1947, this 6566 yard Par 72 is one of the United Kingdom's most famous championship coastal links courses. Handicap certificates are required as this course is not for the faint hearted.

Powfoot Golf Club

This 6266 Yard Par 71 course is an excellent 18 hole challenge, providing a good test for players of all abilities. The course is laid out close to the Solway Estuary with fantastic views across the water to the Cumbrian coast.

Dumfries & County Golf Club

A 5928 Par 69, 18 hole course set in fairly flat parkland, bordered on the north and the west by the river Nith. The greens and fairways are kept in superb condition, providing a perfect setting for an excellent round of golf.

Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club

A challenging 18 hole course measuring 6325 yards, set in rolling countryside on the western outskirts of Dumfries. With immaculately kept greens and fairways this Par 71 course provides a good test for golfers of all abilities.


WALKING

There are many beautiful walks with plentiful wildlife in and around this part of the countryside for the enthusiastic hill walker, and for the not-so enthusiastic you can take a stroll along the woodlands and the riverside walks.

If it's a challenge you're looking for head for the hills with over 24 named peaks above 2000ft in the Galloway hills. Dumfries & Galloway offers a wealth of rewarding treks. The Dalveen pass just a few miles away has striking scenery and a dramatic walk to the summit of Lowther Hill and Wanlockhead. The Grey Mares Tail, a 200 ft waterfall is not to be missed.
